Maleficent was a demonstration that the best intentions in the world may seem callous, or even evil, to the outside observer. Maleficent had a hard life. She was de-winged by her first true love Stefan, and in retaliation made the slight faux pas of horribly cursing a baby girl. She had a big change of heart, of course, but turned out to be so good at curses that hers were too powerful for even her to break. She almost gave everything to save Aurora, and even passed on a chance to get back at Stefan when she finally got it. Pretty good redemption for an “evil” witch!
