Phenomena (1985)

Shadow delineation is lacking detail in most of dark scenes, exhibiting deep, undefined blacks, but no contrast. A completely blackened room is required to see what little information is in the darkness. Sometimes the picture looks digital, but compression pixelization is minor throughout. Color fidelity is a bit inconsistent, but is often generally natural, with accurate fleshtones and hues. Video artifacts are apparent throughout for a picture that is generally mediocre throughout. This is a re-mastered soundtrack that, while credited as Dolby® Digital discrete 5.1, the mix is more accurately a 4.1 presentation as surround envelopment is virtually monaural. The sound quality is dated with poor dynamics, background hiss and noise and distortion. Dialogue is poorly integrated spatially and dubbed in English. The music score is thin sounding, though there are moments of enhanced .1 LFE. When viewed in component video, colors are natural and well defined. Contrast and shadow delineation are also improved for an eye-popping visual experience. There is no apparent noise or artifacts. The Dolby® Digital 5.1 discrete soundtrack is spatially discrete sounding. The soundtrack is dynamic with bass extension reaching to below 25Hz, and effective aggressive surround with directional effects.
