It's no surprise that some of Philip Glass's most inspiring projects have been multimedia. The composer's minimalist tendencies lend themselves to the accompaniment of vast landscapes, silent films, and--now--Tod Browning's 1931 horror classic, Dracula. With longstanding collaborators the Kronos Quartet performing the score, Glass has created a soundtrack that moves with rapid-fire momentum and a timeless chamber-music feel. Dracula never sounds sinister or ironic, just ominous--the perfect companion to a film with plenty of dialogue but no pre-existing score. So what if we've already heard Glass's stylistic trademarks--striking arpeggios, repeated motifs, and the like--on any number of albums (for example, the Kronos/Glass soundtrack to Mishima or Uakti's 1999 release, Aguas de Amazonia)? Unlike the epic three and a half hours of Music in Twelve Parts, this enjoyable disc takes just over an hour and it's well worth hearing. In the new video release of Dracula, accompanied by Glass's score, you'll never see Bela Lugosi's mug the same way again.

    Queen of the Damned
Queen of the Damned Cover Image
     Music by: Various Artists
     Media: CD  SPAR Code: ---
     Tracks: 14  Origin: USA

    1. Not Meant For Me - Wayne Static of Static-X
    2. Forsaken - David Draiman of Disturbed
    3. System - Chester Bennington of Linkin Park
    4. Change - Deftones
    5. Redeemer - Marilyn Manson
    6. Dead Cell - Papa Roach
    7. Penetrate - Godhead

    1. Slept So Long - Jay Gordon of Orgy
    2. Down With The Sickness - Disturbed
    3. Cold-Static - X
    4. Headstrong - Earshot
    5. Body Crumbles - Dry Cell
    6. Excess - Tricky
    7. Before I'm Dead - Kidney Thieves

Befitting the film's hip goth vibe, its accompanying soundtrack is suitably dark and sexy, with a strong mix of new songs and nü-metal hits. In an interesting move, Korn frontman Jonathan Davis collaborated with composer (and former Oingo Boingo keyboardist) Richard Gibbs on 5 of the CD's 14 tracks, though Davis doesn't sing his songs. Instead, taking those duties are Static-X's Wayne Static on "Not Meant for Me," Disturbed's David Draiman on "Forsaken," Linkin Park's Chester Bennington on "System," Marilyn Manson on "Redeemer," and Orgy's Jay Gordon on "Slept So Long." Most of the Davis-Gibbs collaborations are akin to more atmospheric, dramatic Korn tunes, lent a distinctive personality by each singer, with Manson's being the creepiest-coolest and most aggressive entry. While these adroit alliances make the soundtrack a must-have for each of the band's fans (not to mention the Korn faithful), the previously released cuts are also winners. Deftones' creepy "Change," Papa Roach's angry "Dead Cell," and Disturbed's memorable rage "Down with the Sickness"--in addition to lesser-known, but sinister and titillating offerings from Godhead, Kidney Thieves, Earshot, Tricky, and others--are all worth the price of admission to this "damned" stellar soundtrack. --Katherine Turman (amazon.com)

Director Joel Schumacher, who went on to helm many big-budget, tiny-intellectual movies, gave us an 1980s update of the story of the vampire. It was all hip, good-looking, and tremendously vacuous. Similarly, the music doesn't break any new ground or offer much that's timeless. INXS' collaborations with Jimmy Barnes are fine, for instance, but Foreigner vocalist Lou Gramm's "Lost in the Shadows (The Lost Boys)" verges on the painful in a way that only overwrought 1980s music can. Roger Daltrey's take on Elton John's "Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me" is by the numbers, and so wasted. It's only Echo and the Bunnymen's cover of The Doors' "People Are Strange" that warrants much attention, even if it's, erm, buried.
