The DVD, matted at 1.82:1, is not anamorphic and exhibits an excellent gray scale with deep blacks. Shadow detail and contrast are nicely rendered with images that are generally sharp and detailed, but often hazy. The picture is generally solid, with only minor digital noise, but some major artifacts are apparent. Overall, this is a pleasing black and white presentation and will inevitably please fans of Mel Brooks' no matter how good or bad it looks. The Dolby® Digital encoded monaural soundtrack is spread to the two front channels and is phase problematic. The sound is quite bright with effects pulled forward.
