The non-anamorphic DVD delivers pleasantly sharp and detailed images when viewed in the component format. The colors are natural looking and fully saturated, though sometimes plugged up in interiors. The DVD, framed at 2.32:1, appears to be from a D-2 composite digital master with apparent NTSC artifacts, though there is no chroma noise. The Dolby® Digital 5.1 discrete presentation is a scream. Surround is nicely aggressive in some scenes and adds to the tension of the film. The music score is well recorded with good fidelity and imaging, while dialogue often sounds unnatural and ADR-produced. Overall, the soundtrack will surely please.

The picture on the non-anamorphic DVD exhibits sharp and detailed images, but color fidelity is slightly reddish. Exteriors are nicely rendered and natural looking. There are no distracting artifacts or noise. The DVD is framed at 2.32:1. The Dolby® Digital 5.1 discrete soundtrack is quite dynamic and spatial. Dialogue is monaural directed with generally poor spatial integration, but surround envelopment is aggressive. The discrete soundtrack sounds dimensional due to their split surround capability which is nicely effective. Bass extension is powerful, and is especially dynamic when the .1 LFE channel is engaged. The music score is nicely recorded with an expansive and deep soundstage.

The anamorphically enhanced 2.35:1 DVD exhibits pleasing quality with sharp and detailed images into backgrounds. Colors sometimes appear a bit pumped-up, but are otherwise nicely balanced. Shadow delineation is excellent, with nicely rendered depth between darkness and picture black. The slight hard-edged appearance, as well as edge enhancement, keeps this otherwise pleasing picture from reference quality. The Dolby® Digital 5.1-channel soundtrack is a superb sonic presentation that is downright energetic and engrossing. The excellent fidelity is a remarkable testament to Buena Vista's characteristically exemplary soundtrack productions. At times, the soundstage is energized with aggressive, prominent split surrounds and a wide sonic image with substantial depth. The dialogue is impressive, with natural-sounding voices and very good spatial integration. The soundfield is consistently open and spacious throughout. Bass is significantly deep with penetrating rumbles and some .1 LFE. The music is an excellent recording and its spatially prominent presence plays a vital role in conveying the uneasy emotions.
