- Alice's "supposed" husband is named Spencer. In the first Resident Evil game, the mansion it took place in was called "Spencer Estate".
- There is a shot near the end of the film of Alice's eye close up. This is a direct reference to the first game in the series. The close up eye shot is the logo/title screen of the game.
- Producer Jeremy Bolt appears as a zombie several times throughout the movie.
- The sequence with the soldiers trapped in the hallway being killed by the moving lasers was inspired by a similar sequence in the Canadian film Cube.
- This film was originally titled "Resident Evil:Ground Zero," but the title was changed to just "Resident Evil" after the September 11 attacks.
