Plot Summary:

Strange things begin to occur as a tiny California coastal town prepares to commemorate its centenary. Inanimate objects spring eerily to life; Rev. Malone stumbles upon a dark secret about the town's founding; radio announcer Stevie witnesses a mystical fire; and hitchhiker Elizabeth discovers the mutilated corpse of a fisherman. Then a mysterious iridescent fog descends upon the village, and more people start to die.

Quotes:

    [On the phone]
    Stevie Wayne
You're just a voice on the telephone.
    Dan O'Bannon
And you're just a voice on the radio. We make a perfect couple.
    Stevie Wayne
Sorry, Dan. My idea of perfection isn't a voice on the phone.

    Father Malone
Why not six, Blake? Why not me?

[Referring to Stevie Wayne's voice on the radio]
    Al Williams
Boy, would I like to meet her.
    Dick Baxter
I saw her in the supermarket once.
    Al Williams
    Yeah?
    Dick Baxter
You WOULD like to meet her.

    Kathy Williams
Sandy, you're the only person I know who can make "Yes, Ma'am" sound like "Screw You".
    Sandy Fadel
    Yes, Ma'am.

Trivia:

  • Adrienne Barbeau's last line, "...look for the fog...", echoes the last line from The Thing from Another World, "Watch the skies." John Carpenter later remade that film as The Thing.

  • Bennett, The handyman with Father Malone in the beginning, is played by an uncredited John Carpenter.

  • The coroner is listed in the credits as "Dr. Phibes", an in-joke reference to the Vincent Price character, Dr. Anton Phibes.

  • The band mentioned on the radio near the beginning is "The Coupe DeVilles", which features director John Carpenter.

  • Characters Nick Castle, Dan O'Bannon, Tommy Wallace are all named after John Carpenter's real-life collaborators.
